which works fairly well, the only issue I have with it, is that the volume
control appears to be broken, so I end up having to play the games with the

Yeah wear and tear are something to consider.
I saw a Bluetooth receiver type device that you plug your wired headsets in to
that looks interesting also.

You might be interested in the Audioquest Dragonfly.
If you want to go bluetooth, there is the Earstudio ES100. Both of these have
a 3.5 jack.
I believe there are other such devices with a 1/4 inch connector as well.
