for mail and text web browsers, VO HAS some pretty awkward tracking issues.
Brtty is specifically designed to work with a terminal and does a wonerful job

Sorry, but why build Brltty for the mac? Voiceover has extensive braille
support, and it is the only screen reader available for the Mac to my
knowledge. There may be edge cases where independent braille output would be
helpful, but I can't think of any. Aside from the fun of the project itself
You definitely need to use screen-4.0.1 and that still can be compiled and
still does work and still is available but you have to get the source and
compile it. You need this because you have to use the brltty patches with it.

Okay, I tried it. I removed Soundflower and ran a permissions repair, just in
case. So far, emails seem to open immediately, and apps, while still slower to
launch than even a Lion machine, are faster than they were. Hopefully this will
do the trick. Thanks for your help, everyone.
