I have a clean install of Leopard upgraded to 10.5.1 and I'm trying to
install MacPorts with the 1.6 Universal Installer for Leopard.
Everything gets installed, but the post install script doesn't update
my .profile as noted in the Install docs.

That's strange. It built fine on my MacBook Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz on 10.5
as a dependency for Subversion.
Were you building zlib on its own or as a part of another port?
