"sudo port install py27-scipy" gives "sudo: port: command not found".

Given that my port command is back to not working, this may be a

This is painfully confusing. I've installed MacPorts a few times on a
couple of Macs, never had this much trouble before.

Nope, completely new account. My personal Mac has bash, but this one
seems to have defaulted to tcsh for some reason.
If I switch to bash now, will I need to reset my PATH, like I did with
setenv under tcsh?

Don't know what to tell you. This is a brand new iMac, only been out
of the box for a week. I haven't changed anything, and echo $SHELL
returns tcsh.

Because tcsh is the default and I can't work out how to change it to bash. ;)

Grr. I thought we had it for a moment.

This is where we start to reach the limits of my Terminal Fu! To
change my tsch start up files as suggested, would I run
export PATH=/opt/local/bin:opt/local/sbin:$PATH
?

Hi Craig/all, thanks for getting back.
If I run the command as written, I get the following:
/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/opt/X11/bin:/usr/texbin
MANPATH: Undefined variable.

Hi everyone,
I've downloaded and installed MacPorts via the .pkg. The installer
reports that everything installed correctly. However, when I run "man
port", Terminal tells me that there's "No manual entry for port".
Similarly for "sudo port -v selfupdate" I get "sudo: port: command not
found".
