CMake has the same dilemma. I'm using Qt4 on macOS 10.14 latest & see no issues on a retina display excepting that the "retina" concept isn't supported. IIRC we've added tweaks to allow the user to select the default rendering engine, and that took care of all of the issues I've heard of or see
