At least as of LyX 2.3.0 LyX displays a "Reload file" prompt, if it detects
that the LyX file has been changed externally, e.g. by Dropbox, external

Responding to Scott's suggestion, I've attached *.lyx and *.pdf files that illustrate what we're trying to accomplish.
As you can see, the computer code marked as bold displays correctly in the lyx editor, but does not display as bold in the *.pdf file.

I just discovered that I can display bold code listings in my *.pdf document by selecting Courier as the Typewriter font in Settings.
