I am using RevTeX4 in two columns and the 100% column width is what you
need, i.e. it works on my computer. I know this doesn't help... Maybe the
problem is the eps files (bounding box, etc.)?

I have worked out the problem.
For anyone else dealing with columns.lyx works out the width of
the figure, and then applies any rotation you declare. So if you want to
put in images that need rotating through 90 degrees you need to scale the
height to 100% col. Then upon rotation this
