Good news-- I saw Uwe's note that the standard installer for 1.6.5 for
Windows is now finally available. So I uninstalled Lyx once again, and
using the standard installer was able to install and run Lyx on both
Windows XP machines, on which the altinstaller was giving me such a hard
time.

1. I got the error when I was in the C:\program files\Lyx 1.6.5\bin
directory.
2. Lyx.exe resides in that same directory
3. As far as I know, no other Lyx is installed on either one of the

I was worried about that, and in despair logged on as administrator and
tried again, but got the same behavior--
clicking on the Lyx icon I see a brief DOS (cmd) window which
disappears, then another DOS window appears briefly, disappears, and
then silence-- Lyx never appears.

I shall try it when I get back home. However, I suspected that Lyx is
doing something like that, and therefore I did wait for over an hour
with a broad-band internet connection, but nothing happened-- at least
nothing that I could see.
