I assume you need this in the math editor.
I've used the following command to declare the math operator, it requires
the use of the amsmath package (or one of its associates)
\DeclareMathOperator*{\esssup}{ess\ sup}
This declares the ess sup operator, you can use:
\DeclareMathOperator*{\argmax}{
