i was able to convert some docs with czech accents via pdfedit,
it may work for you too.

What about opening the document in OpenOffice, exporting to LaTeX, and
then importing into LyX?
I can open the original word document with ooweriter, but when trying to
export it to latex I get an error message that my JRE is defect.
So I have to reinstall tha
