1. Start Lyx.
2. Select File/New to create a fresh document.
3. Press Alt-m d. This puts you into math mode, inside a purple or blue
box.
4. Press Alt-m [ to create brackets

to create a simple matrix using Lyx. If I could get instructions for
creating a 3x1 matrix, I should be able to figure out what I need, e.g.
