I have the same problem with your file. If I write any letter except 'y,j,f,p,g,q' the result is ok (i.r. the letters appear above the
'='). But as soon as I write any of those letters, LyX moves the word down, generating the overlapping.
Maybe it is a problem with LyX on my machine (Windows XP

Works fine here. I write \overset, press space, and then fill in the two
appearing boxes.

The \overset math command is not correctly displayed in my LyX 1.5.0rc2
installation, but it was in LyX 1.4.4. Is this a known problem?
