now I can state more precisely what my troubles were. I actually did
"Reconfigure" (many times ;-) - well, I should be ashamed if not, as it's
written in the instructions very clearly.
There is NO problem if you put the LyX bundle in /Applications. However, the
instructions say

Tex has a program to find all relevant paths which does not run when
installing on the mac. As root, run "texhash"
from the commandline.
