I believe I have found out why this happens: I think I need to include a
statement like
\newrefformat{lem}{Lemma~\ref{#1}}
in the latex preamble, where ~ would be a protected blank. Thanks to Pavel,
who got me thinking in this direction!

the FAQ at lyx.org and couldn't find anything about this.
So here's the problem: when I do a cross reference with prettyref, then
lyx/latex will sometimes break apart the leading word and the reference
