solve the problem definitely. At the moment, I was just very glad that LyX
was running at all.

Try altering the graphics resolution, your desktop machine has probably
got a higher bit depth than your laptop, and qt tends to core dump under
what has been termed `colour starvation'.
BTW using higher than 8-bit depth solved this problem for me!
