Bibtex desperation

I am fairly new to Latex and Lyx and am diving into Bibtex in the hope of simplifying my bibliographic needs (apa style). I seem to have finally gotten all the apa stuff working, but whenever I cite something I get the following "(?, ?)" instead of what should be there--the citation. Anybody know
