The latest lyx (1.6 fix 3 is what I am using) comes with the llncs.layout
and llncs.cls files already installed. I have used these for a couple of
LLNCS papers this year and they work fine.
Ok, I have found the files: and they are attached in case you are using an
older LyX.

Sorry this is rather late in the day, but I have been using ktexmaker which
is a(nother) front end for LaTeX. This has xgfe integrated into it and runs
just fone on my Mandrake 8.0 box.
I am using ktexmaker2-16
BTW ktexmaker is neat for fiddling with LaTeX directly, but LyX is still
heaps more u

Yes I have just had the same situation. It occured when appending columns
to an existing small (4 column) table.
I got round this by creating a new table of the required size and moving the
data. No problems since adding or deleting columns.

Yes, I had in mind the input markup being of use in 20 years time, as opposed to the
output format de jour. I have in my collections some old files in runnof (from Prime
computers amongst others) and nroff files that I can readily access with vi. This
works of course only if you have the means
