If I understood correctly you want to open documents in tabs in the
same window.
To do so, open LyX 1.6.1, go to preferences (shortcut key combo:
command + ,),
and enable "Open documents in tabs" in the Look & Feel -> User
interface menu.

There are a few options to solve the issue. I personally prefer the
most straight forward ones, which are:
A) Rotate the Figure float: Right-click on the Float:Figure inset ->
Settings -> check Rotate sideways
