I solved this by downgrading to 1.2.3 from 1.3.0-7. The problem was
probably using RPMs instead of compiling from tarballs -- which were
unavilable for 1.3.0-7 or 4.

it I can find in the docs (by grepping the lyx/doc dir for "compose key")
is in FAQ 8.2. And it's one of the few items with no answer! :-(
