this file with /etc/fonts/fonts.conf (and I haven't a clue what, if
anything should be changed there).

I've just been trying to use the envlab latex package with a letter in
lyx. "envlab" is available from CTAN and prints envelope labels.
I was thinking that all I needed to do was to insert :
\usepackage{envlab}
\makelabels

There's probably a better way, but you can just use TeX mode and enter
"\pounds".
