I am writing a paper using the IEEEtran document class. This is a
two-column format. I would like to place some tables on a page by
themselves. The tables are wide so they need to use width of page rather
than one of the two columns. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can
do this

I was able to fix the error by removing the Bibtex Bibliography at the end
of the document and reinserting it. But I have no idea what caused this.
