Is there a way to create a per document list of words to ignore? When

Actually, it's quite easy. The key is to make the continuation of (1) be a
standard paragraph, but indent it so that it does not alter the numbering
of (2). I hope this is clear:
1. [enumerated paragraph] item 1
(a) [indented enumerated paragraph] sub-item
(b) [indented enumerated paragrap
