I was using the plunsrt style...which looks like it was the source of the
trouble. I switched the style to unsrt, and now everything is in english.
Weird, I didn't think there was any language specific stuff in the
bibliography style.

not very elegant, but works well for me:
I format all the stuff as "Date" - using line breaks, font size, \vspace
etc.
Then it appears on the title page.

Is there an easy way to alternate the colours of rows in a table
(e.g. so it looks like traditional tractor-feed fanfold paper if any of
you are old enough to remember)

I'm having a strange problem with my bibliography. I think the wrong language
is being used only in the bibiliography (the rest of the document s ok). My
bibliography is generated by bibtex, and the bibtex file looks fine, but I
see things like "redaktor" instead of editor, etc.

capt-of increases the counter _and_ longtable also by default.
Insert a \addtocounter{table}{-1} helps. See example.

Hmm. I'm not sure what to suggest. If you have dvipost installed, you've
reset the outer margin, and you are creating the PDF from View > PDF
(dvipdfm) then I'm stumped.
I would doublecheck the installation and review the Wiki page, be sure
