Figure display deteriorated

I must be missing another component on my Slackware-10.0/LyX-1.3.5 system that was present on the former Red Hat-7.3/LyX-1.3.4. Now, when I open a figure float the displayed figure is barely discernable. Before, I was able to clearly see it: lines, files, text. As Paul and others pointed out, I
