Sorry, I tried it again and it is fine now. I was
actually using a bibliography manager called JabRef
and I had inserted new references in there. However,
what I didnt realise is that I had to save it in order
for the references to appear in the dialog box in lyx
when you insert citation ref

and LaTex, see also book of Herbert Voss) under Lyx:
If you insert by cut and paste or import one of the examples given in the
literature, make sure to get rid of the paragraphs which are (wrongly)
created by Lyx in ER

May be it will work if you overscale the size of a lyx window.
