I see Herbert says that this is not possible with the standard LyX
tabular menu, but I have found a workaround that works rather well.

OK, but if you don't use a special keyboard layout in LyX (menu Edit ->
Settings), I have no other idea what's going wrong.

I don't use Mdk, but it seems to be a problems of your keyboard layout
(test if you also get "^e"
