Answered my own question: No. And No.
But, if I enclose the entire title in double braces it typesets just fine.
Sorry for the noise
Now that you've taught me to isolate the entire author string from
expansion by using double braces, I need to learn how to keep initials
capitalized within a title. Natbib puts all characters in lower case after
the initial letter of the title, but some titles contain initials or other
text that

Simple forms can be made using tables, and perhaps a few
latex commands. More complicated ones can be made with xfig:

Hello all,
This must pehhaps be sent to bugzilla, but maybe there is a simple
explanation...
kpsewhich -format=eps
works fine in a shell.
Semms that lyx doesn't use it to find graphics,
so that site files cannot be made available through texmf.cnf/texhash
Any clue about this ?

Although I'm a touch-typist and _much_ prefer working directly with text

Hello,
I have noticed that tables in older Lyx-files (in my case lyxformat 215
created by KLyX) are not imported correctly into Lyx 1.3.1
I found that this is due to an additional blank after a \newline command
within the tables.
Executing

this one.

It looks more like a Latex problem to me. What document class and packages are
you using?
Metrics for ecbx1440 are not available on my tetex 2.0.2 either.
None of my classes have ever asked for them.
Metrics for ecbx2074 are in tetex-extra package for debian.
Do you have these fonts installed?
