I am writing a book using Komascript book class in LyX. In this book I want to add a
list of symbols used to indicate different quantities. How to do this?

thanks for your answer. I tried your suggestions, but was only half successful.
You will probably find that if you click
on the LyX mini-buffer, you can enter the characters there. You could
copy them to the LyX buffer, but this is a poor substitute for the
preferable behavior in MacOS-1

I think there's recent work by João Assirati to enable exactly that, but
that's in the development version only IIRC.

I'm used to switch from YAP to WinEdt by clicking in the DVI-preview
window of YAP. Doing so in a Lyx-produced dvi file results in the error
message "Cannot open the tex source. No source links". Can I change
this?
Producing dvi and previewing it from WinEdt opens the dvi file and
