Never mind, I found the answer -- probably a bug in 1.1.6fix1.
As I mentioned, the text field in format->tabular->column/row->width cannot
accept and store a value. But if I go in with VI and put "0.5in" as the
width, the column assumes the proper width and the field at
format->tabular->column
I'm trying to make a simple table like you make in HTML or MS Word, where
columns wordwrap in such a way that the table stays within the page margins.
I've tried stuff like format->tabular->column/row->width, but whether or not
I included units it wouldn't be taken. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm not having the problem anymore, though I'm not sure why. I
apparently changed my layout enough that I accidentally fixed the
problem. In case it pops up again, though what does the redefinition
look like? Is it near the beginning of the document? (I don't know
anything about latex.)
Thank

Divide the problem in half. Export to postscript on each machine, then print
the postscript files on the alternate machines. Does the error follow the
export to postscript, or the printing of the postscript?
By the way, your symptom description seems to indicate that this error comes

Herbert,
Could you explai
I've detected and resolve the same problem in my LaTeX export.
The problem is a redefinition that LyX does in the LaTeX export. See if
in your LaTeX export yo have this redefinition. Delete it, and run
latex2html. The footnotes will appear in your HTML ouput.
