do you have the font ptmr8r installed?
if not, get it at

Sily question: how do I get a literal "--" in normal text ? e.g. for describing
options like --dry-run. Must I use ERT ?

where can I find the missing font ?

I had a rpm binary installed (on my Suse7.1) . After compiling lyx myself the
error is gone :-)
