I still cannot use the \cfoot{} command (empty or not)
in the preamble.
Instead I had to use the "old" way to have it work:
\usepackage{lastpage}
\renewcommand{\@evenfoot}%
{\normalsize\hfil {\thepage} of \pageref{LastPage}\hfil}
\renewcommand{\@oddfoot}{\@evenfoot}

Also, I looked at the Help pages,
and tried the recommended

installed, except for the fact that I have imlib instead of xpm but it is
recognized as xpm ve
