[patch] fun stuff - boost::filesystem

I am not really planning for any of this to go in now, but I wanted to play a bit with boost::filesystem to see how it fit... Not too badly it turns out, but the restrictions on filenames might be tough. Anyhow this is the patch... we can actually remove some code if we go down this road later.
