On principle this mail was to be sent privately to one person, but I did
"reply" to a previous mail. Unfortunately I didn't notice it is "Cc" to a
couple of LyX lists (among them the announce list). I noticed it first

Not to me on my RH 6.1 box. Perhaps you did not set DISPLAY for root
when you did this, and then lyx *always* does this:
# lyx
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
# ls -l core

- "\\.{z}" and "\\.{Z}" are displayed as "z" and "Z" respectively,
