But that alpha is a math alpha. It was never intended for setting
greek text (and the math greek looks pretty horrible at setting text).

The syntax has beed changed.
You now need to use "math-insert \bar"

In the formula editor, the M-m l tag which makes sub- and superscripts
be below and above integrals and sums disappears when copying and
pasting and is reset to subscripts and superscript to the right of the
sum/integral symbol.
