We need a reminder from time to time that coding in C++ is less painful

Rather than try and pull this off my machine from the aeronautics dept, I
thought I'd just send you the patch.
This is the full, unadulterated patch to the source as I have it here. It
includes all the trial and error changes to the global variables as well as
the genuine leak fixes.
