I am told that revTEX is an ideal document class for the paper I wish to
write. Although itis an option in my document choices I get the error
message "revtex.sty not found". It's there, I put it there (where the
other .sty files live), so why can't it find it ?

I'm a fairly new user to Lyx and I am starting to realise the power of the
preamble and using in text TEX commands.
I'm using "book" (sometimes report, can't decide yet) as my base style and a
whole load of preamble and in-text TEX commands to set my PhD thesis layout
to just how I like it.
