Is fontenc supposed to be used for XeTeX?

If I create a new document, write "abc", and export to LaTeX (XeTeX), there is the following line: \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} Günter suggested that this should not happen (unless we are in compatibility mode). Is this expected? Scott
