Since I don't have much of a guess where the problem is, and I wasn't able to
get more information with gdb (because I didn't get the SEGV with it), I will
tell you the history of this problem.
A friend with a scanner created (via Photoshop?) a bitmap .eps file for me.

If Lyx can't fit a figure in the text, it tries the top of page,
and if that fails puts it on the next page.
There is a serious problem with that. If there is already a
figure at the top of the current page, the figure will be placed
on the next page even if it is a very small figure. The proble

is thinking about better WYSIWYG for figure placement.
Many modern books have much more sophisticated layout than the
simple Lyx Book class.
