Working on the last-chance update of the po-files, I had also a look on
what LyX does when it doesn't do anything
There's something *really* strange going on: I had 'top' running in 1
second update mode and noticed that the cpu-usage is going up and down
in waves:

After making up my mind, I have tried to change the matrix dialog in
math_forms.fd
in such a way that size does not change. The side effect is that buttons
are now
on the right.
