My problem was that I didn't read far enough down in the thread, where
the correct file to be edited was pointed-out.
It works now.

Running 14.04. Editing /etc/lxdm/default.conf
bg=/usr/share/lubuntu/wallpapers/kittencat.jpg
doesn't work.
Does it have to be the same resolution as the default image? A tutorial in
ubuntuforums doesn't mention it.
