Yeah those netbooks are a bit of a challenge to upgrade
I have tried it, but they are also a bit picky, i tried 3 RAM modules
the i have laying around, only one got exepted and that one slowed the
performance down.

When I put Ubuntu Netbook Edition on a very resource-constrained Acer
Aspire 1, I added an old, used 1GB DIMM -
Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Alpha 2 (soon to be 16.10) has been released!

You can try to boot with a Plop floppy and chainload to a USB boot
drive. Remember to use the boot option forcepae for the Pentium M to
work with the pae kernel of Lubuntu 16.04.4 LTS.

Runs like a dream already!
using about 117MB of RAM so thats plenty of spare brains.
and all the config preferences dialogs even fit on the screen! in 12.04
the OK / cancel buttons often fell out of sight.

It has no sense that Lubuntu-aternate ISO (and maybe desktop too)
exceeds 700MB.
Debian-Live-LXDE exceeds the normal CD size too.
