Julien, for language support, etc. would you and the other devs be happy to
change the desktop ISO to dvd size, but with a commitment to support
alternate as CD size?

Alternate needs to stay at CD size for as long as is possible, but I'd
support switching desktop to 1GB. On a related topic, I think some
packages are still using level 9 xz compression which might be a poor
tradeoff in size vs performance, as level 6 is the highest recommended by
debian.
