Thank you again, Israel, it did explain better what you meant, but I would
still like to hear exactly how to do what I want to do at this stage.

Latest upgrade of both Lubuntu 14.10 and Xubuntu 14.10 (including
upgrade of lightdm) resulted in booting to the GUI. Also sound has
arrived in Xubuntu.
It looks like both are reaching a final stage for release.
