I just finished a little tool that helps boot some computers from
[other] USB boot drives - the Chainloader
The chainloader is useful for middle-aged computers, for example
computers without a CD/DVD drive, where it can be hard to boot from a
USB drive, or when you want to run from a fast USB
So sorry. Wrong in a different way (I re-installed these two just to
sure). Neither one of these pkgs has any icon showing. The icon lines in
the shortcuts are correct for each though.

You can run some really small linux distro just to test the computer and
to run some commands to get more knowledge. For example, try DSL (damn
small linux), puppy linux or tiny core linux or Ubuntu 12.04 mini.iso
(without any graphic desktop environment). See this link

It was an absolute no-go
I am not sure what happened, but it seemed to me that there was a major
conflict between the lightdm I had and the lxqt lightdm.
I could not get past plymouth at all. Actually the screen stayed black
until I dropped over to my tty. when I went back to my X the plymouth

This isn't exactly related to non-PAE CPU, but related.
My equipment is mostly old and therefore became available to me at no
cost.. :)
However, as much of it 8 years or older, some of the CPU capabilities
required by newer kernels are not available to my cadre..
