Why not just add a mention on the wiki to use fake-pae for people in
this case ? It seems less complicated that downloading a full version
of Lubuntu just for this.
If you are blocked by the upgrade tool, just advertise the use of
"apt-get dist-upgrade".

choose to use an LXDE based operating system running with
Ubuntu repository (I think it's called Lubuntu). So words like fork,
patches, choice, apply to open source solutions, even if there are
unique on a specific distro. You can't apply the same to closed
sources solution.

to use the mini.iso, and use the linux-generic kernel when the installer
ask for it. I just tried it, and it's pretty easy. A short documentation
with some screenshots and a note on release notes should do the job IMO.
