I usually recommend: - KiwiIRC for a web-based client - Pidgin for a desktop client(Linux, that is) - irssi for a terminal/idling(couple it with tmux and put it on a shell and there you go) client(this is what I use) - CIRC if you want a Chrome extension I have used all of these at
