Updated info - I completely forgot this fact until playing around with
trying to fix this problem...
After running out of space on my root partition, I symlinked my apt-cache
directory to a directory on a HFS partition (I had done this some time
ago, and never had any problems until now).

Testing with newer kernels, I'm still getting these kernel OOP's and
memory allocation issues with saving large file names that I reported a
while ago.
In particualar, saving files over 32 chars in length to a HFS partiton. In
2.2, no problems. The name would truncate and everything is happy.
