I run a Linux 2.6.9 kernel with RAID and LVM on a combined total of six
ATA and SATA harddisks. While booting /dev/hdg is recognised and even
used by RAID:
# dmesg |grep hdg
ide3: BM-DMA at 0xdf98-0xdf9f, BIOS settings: hdg:pio, hdh:pio
hdg: WDC WD2000JB-00EVA0, ATA DISK drive
hdg: max
