You can't just call it, you need to either create a system call, or use
IOCTLs.
Read the FAQ at http://www.tux.org/lkml/ for general info and sources of
information.

Hello I have two questions regarding Linux 2.0.x
1. Did anybody tried running Linux 2.0.x on the Intel i840 chipset based
boards?
2. Does anybody knows of a 2.0.x driver for Intel's 82543GC Gigabit Ethernet
MAC (aka e1000) ?
Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Gabi
http://linux24.sourceforge.net/ is a good place to start.

You should be.
Also I suggest you read the lkml FAQ at http://www.tux.org/lkml/ . It should
give quite a few starting points.

Via Rhine.
It seems your link either went down or had too many collisions. This caused
the driver to yell "something wicked happened".
