I'm not sure if that is the problem, but I had a similar problem once, where I switch my mouse for bus mouse to ps/2 and it wasn't recognised by the x server anymore because it couldn't find it. It was under debian so I am not sure if its the same thing. Check if you x server (XF86Config, I thin
